How To Draw A Sheep: Cute Funny Cartoon Style Sheep Drawing - step-by-step-drawing tutorial featured image

Today we will learn a very easy way how to draw a sheep. The most recognisable mark of a sheep is its body puffed up with thick woolly fleece. If you just add some legs and head to the big ball of fluffy wool you will get a lovely cartoon style sheep. Let's learn how to draw that puffy wool fleece and sheep head from some very simple shapes.

How to draw a sheep: base sketch step by step

Step 1 : Draw the sheep's body and head base shapes

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's body and head base shapes

Our sheep drawing starts as usual with just simple shapes: Draw a large oval, almost a circle, for the sheep's body. Then draw another small oval for the sheep's head - this one is narrow and tilted out, placed at about the middle of the body and overlapping the body edge.

Step 2 : Draw the sheep's face

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's face

Let's give our sheep some face and head features. Start by drawing two circles for the eyes - these sit right on the top of the head oval. Add two small dots inside them for the pupils in the eyes.

Then draw the sheep's "hair" - this is a funny cauliflower hairdo made of three round lumps. Then sketch the ears - again, just simple ovals tilted down, one on each side of the head, attached at the top just between the eyes and the hair.

Finally, add two more tiny flat ovals tilted sideways at the lower part of the face for the nostrils.

Step 3 : Draw the sheep's legs and tail

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's legs and tail

Next, draw sheep's legs. Staying with the very simple cartoon style, these are just straight lines, doubled up for each leg.  Continuing with the cartoon exaggeration, we make our sheep look funny by drawing really thin and short legs compared to the sheep's massive body.

Then add hooves to each leg - these are "D" shapes laid on the flat side with a tiny line for the split between the two "fingers".

Last but not least, our sheep needs a tail - draw it again as a simple narrow oval hanging down from the centre of the body oval.

Step 4 : Draw the sheep's mouth

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's mouth

The final detail, to make our drawing look even funnier, is to draw the sheep's mouth. This is made from a "U" line sticking out sideways for the mouth. The mouth is then joined with another smooth curve to the head.

And because our sheep is not only cute but also very lucky, let's draw it a nice four-leaf clover to chew on.

How to draw a sheep: outline the drawing step by step

Step 1: Draw the sheep's head

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's head

Time to outline and improve on our sketch. Start by drawing out the sheep's face. Draw the eyes. When outlining the face, join the upper face edges to the end of the nostrils. Notice the added fold above the right nostril. Colour in the nostrils and outline the rest of the face following the sketch lines.

The lucky clover is also a straight outline of the sketch, with added midribs - just short lines inside each leaf. Finally, outline the mouth, breaking the line where the clover stem comes out of the sheep's mouth.

Step 2: Draw the sheep's hairdo, ears and front legs

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's hairdo, ears and front legs

Draw the sheep's hairdo first. Then outline the ears, as these are partially hidden behind the hair.

Next, draw the two legs that are on the front side of the body - facing towards you. Fill the legs in black as you draw them, and add small "C" endings at the top, to make them look sticking out of the wool fleece. Finally, outline the hooves.

Step 3: Draw the sheep's wool fleece

Drawing step: Draw the sheep's wool fleece

It is time to have some fun and make the sheep finally look like a sheep.  Let's draw the fluffy wool fleece. Use lots of "C" curves, joined one after another, to outline the sheep's body. Notice the curves are larger on the back and underbelly and get smaller as you transition to the tail.

Step 4: Draw the other two legs

Drawing step: Draw the other two legs

Now that we know the final shape of the body, draw the remaining two legs as they stick out from behind the body. Again, colour them in black as you draw them.

Oh, and here is another small detail to add - let's draw some wiggle lines around the clover - these suggest the leaf moving as the sheep chews on it.

Step 5: Draw the wool fleece texture

Drawing step: Draw the wool fleece texture

The very final improvement is to add some more of the wool fleece texture to the sheep's body. Just draw more of the same "C" shaped lines randomly all over the body.

Now - they are not completely random. If you notice, on the upper half of the body, the belly of the "C" points up, on the lower part, it is pointing down - like "U". In the centre of the body, the "C" belly points backwards  - like a "D".

Here is the completed sheep drawing, after we have cleaned up the sketch lines with an eraser. Hope you agree that indeed this is a very easy way how to draw a sheep - just add some legs and head to a big ball of fluffy wool, and you will get a lovely cartoon style sheep.

And here is the usual step to complete our "How to draw a sheep" tutorial - colouring the picture.

Well, even colouring the sheep is easy - the wool is white, so there is not much to colour in. All we are doing is adding some light blue shading - the same trick we have used to add some interest to other white drawings - like the diamond, snowflake, ghost or snowman.

For the face and hooves, we have used a beige (or a dark yellow) colour. The clover is, of course, a nice green. Add some grass for the sheep to stand on and you are done.
